Fast fashion is like a fire. When left unrestrained a fire spreads with increasing size and force leaving damage to everything it touches. In the same way, fast fashion is spreading throughout the world wreaking havoc as it goes. If people continue feeding the flames the damage to our world will be irreversible. Millions of pounds of clothes get sent to landfills each year, but did you ever consider what happens to them once they reach their final destination? Or wonder how this process impacts our environment? Once we realized we had no idea the answers to these questions we got busy researching to find out. The answers were frustrating!
As clothes decompose there are major risks of generating greenhouse methane gas and leaking toxic chemicals and dyes into the groundwater and soil. If it can’t decompose it will sit in landfills until weather washes it away into oceans, streams, and lakes for animals to consume. This hurts wildlife and our ecosystems, including humans. When one part of a food chain falls the entire ecosystem collapses. Another problem mass production and consumption of clothing presents is the space needed. As more and more space is given to clothing items, less space is available to our growing population. Between landfills and manufacturing pollution living conditions in many places are negatively impacted. This is why we believe the fast fashion industry should be shut down and that we should refocus our energy on cleaning up the mess we've made before it’s too late.
The world consumes around 100 billion new garments every year. When we buy inexpensive mass produced garments, we tend to donate or throw away items when they’re no longer on trend. Most clothing donations go to places like GoodWill or Salvation Army but only about 11 percent actually get sold. The other 88 percent are likely to end up in landfills, which is predicted to account for more than 25 percent of the world's global carbon emission by 2050. Being part of a solution can help prevent fast fashion's detrimental impact on our environment. One easy way to get involved is to simply spread awareness to friends and family, and to encourage people to re-use or donate their unwanted clothes to our company.
Fast fashion is like a fire that has spread throughout the world. If people continue feeding the flames, the effects will be irreversible. The Goodwill is receiving on average around 2.5 million garments per year, and has to get rid of clothing and textile waste that can not be sold. This accounts for an estimated 100,000 pounds per month. The industry produces approximately 100 billion garments a year for 8 billion people worldwide, and an astounding 87% of this ends up in landfills or incinerators. The production of synthetic textile is 60% of our clothing and is responsible for 35% of all ocean microplastics that are now in our own food chain. This contributes to 20% of all industrial wastewater and polluted fresh water systems for the use of toxic chemicals (Smarch). Footwear and other apparel are responsible for a giant part of the climate crises. Occupying about 9% of the greenhouse gas footprint, this accounts for more than France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined (Smarch). Currently the U.S Government is not doing anything to deter the fast fashion industry. If nothing is done to change the current fast fashion craze, the industry will continue to grow, and by 2050 is expected to be responsible for more than 25% of the global carbon budget.
